to border or not to border.....that is the question
Please help me decide if and how I should do a border on this wall hanging. It measures a little over 45 inches square.
Here are some of the ideas I came up with:
no border...just leave the yellow strip
a five inch border that matches the center of each plate:
a five inch border with some dresden blades on each corner?
Please submit your ideas. I really do not know how I should finish this one!
I rather like the partial corner block (with roughly 1/4 of a dresden plate)... perhaps you could do all four corners on your design wall and post a photo ... I find that seeing things through photographs helps me clarify what I like more easily than just standing in front of the design wall (clears the nearby clutter from my peripheral vision).
those are fun plates. I'd prefer a brighter border than the blue. Do you have enough of the bright yellow prints to make a piano key border? I think you need something playful at the outside. how much bigger do you need it to be?
Beebee, They both look really nice to me. The corner block DOES give it a little more character though. Brenda's idea sounds good too! Oooh! There are just TOO many options when you're making a quilt, huh?
I like the extra fans in the corner...adds a little zip to the border. A piano key border would look great too although I might throw in some blues with the yellows. I have a bunch of 5 inch squares and a dresden ruler I've never used. I think I'm going to have to give it a go cause yours looks wonderful!
Adding a 5" border will increase the size of the quilt to 55" square. How big is the space where you are going to hang this? [Or isn't it for yourself?]
Having said that, I like option two. I think it lets the MIDDLE be the star of the quilt. Too much in the outer reaches distracts me.
This is a beautiful quilt - I'd try throwing in just a tiny bit of red and that most golden yellow that you used too - just to give the border or even maybe the binding?! a bit of a ZING!!!
Can you stand one more suggestion? First, the dresdens are gorgeous! I like a darker border, to let the middle shine. I would use a narrower red border instead of the yellow, then piece something in darker blues. You could still add dresden pieces to the corners too. Can't wait to see the finished quilt!
I pick the first option of no border. Those fabrics you used for the fan blades are so great that they need nothing more than a very simple binding of red or yellow...depending on where you hang it.
Vote one...narrow red border....love the 1/4 dresden plate corner detail....I have been having fun with dresden plates lately as well....they come together so easily! Nice work!
Hey, Beebee, you don't need my opinion. you already have lots of advice. Whatever you chose will look great. I've just made my first Dresden plate too. I used the Accuquilt Go cutter borrowed from a friend.
What fun to read all the suggestions. I think your dresden plates are lovely. Here's my opinion - no corner dresden additions as I think they detract from the lovely whole blocks and yes, the yellow border as in picture one with a narrow dark blue border round it. It will be very interesting to see what you choose.
I'd do no additional border and use red for your binding. Really makes a quilt feel traditional and gives it a "pop" of color. Beautiful quilt, by the way! I love love love traditional quilt patterns like this.

ReplyDeleteI like option three, but quite a bit more work for you.

I like option 2. But I think you could jazz that option up by quilting piano keys in the border, rather than piecing them with other fabrics.
ReplyDeleteI love it as-is, with no border. But, if you must, I think I'd piece something in blues, with some yellows thrown in. Maybe Dresden wedgies.

ReplyDeleteI´d give some more red a go, although it looks awsome just the way it is and your own ideas seem just great too.

ReplyDeleteI love the little fans in the corners and I also agree that a tiny bit of red (maybe a thin red flange) could add a spark to the border.

ReplyDeletewow, you know, I have to agree on a bit of a red border, you know, maybe 1/2 to 1 inch. Very pretty girl, love it!
